Two tax agents arrived suddenly in our law office with notification that our client was going to be criminally charged for tax evasion. “He’s in the hospital,” we advised, “dying.” We produced a letter from the man’s doctor to that effect. That didn’t stop the tax agents, who said they were determined to make an example of the poor man. We insisted that they get their supervisor on the telephone, and he was equally impervious to the fact that the man would be dead in a month. He was told that if he continued with this prosecution, we would hold a press conference at the dying client’s bedside and expose the tax officials as greedy and heartless beasts. The supervisor got very quiet. Then he asked if he could call back. Ten minutes later he phoned to tell his agents to drop the matter.
